Maybe they'll go after Kovy. Not sure what Edm can offer NJ to make it worth it.

What's the market for a 27 year old guy who scores 20-25 goals and 50-60 points, and makes 6 million dollars a year? I just don't think there was a lot of value out there for him. Maybe if he had a decent playoff run it would be different but all he did was confirm a lot of the doubts that have been surrounding him for the past few seasons.

Giddyup.

Can't believe Ray couldn't get in on the Eberle action.

Fun fact:

Last 3 seasons:

Eberle: 232GP 69G 92A 161P

Duchene: 235GP 69G 86A 155P

This was the best time to trade Eberle. I like Eberle and would prefer him to remain on the team but some people are incapable of projecting salary past this year. Moving Eberle now makes sense for the future. We need a lot of cap space for the multitude of players needing raises in 2018. None more so than McDavid of course.

Not a huge fan of the return but it does check some boxes. Bigger, can "somewhat" play center with a right shot.

Like most I would have preferred to move Eberle for a better defender like Petrovic for example. But you can't even assume Fla had any interest in Eberle.

Cap space open. Insert Strome take out Eberle. Resign Russel, which gives great flexibility to play the left or right. I'd resign Gryba and promote whichever of the three played best with Russel until Sekera gets back. Benning, Nurse, or Gryba.

Chiarelli keeps the team that played extremely well last year largely together. Not exactly a terrible move.

And someone is going to make a mistake with a Duchene trade.

Strome is 23 years old, he’ll be 24 in a couple weeks. He was drafted 5th overall by the Islanders in 2011 and reached his absolute peak in production in 2014-2015 when he scored 17-33-50. However, since that season, Strome has struggled.

Patrick Maroon at 29 just had his best season of his career.

Huh? So it was for cap space to sign Russel? I thought that they needed a dman? And harmonic, barrie and others have been talked about for awhile! Just odd for those wanting a dman they couldn't get one for ebbs?so it was a cheaper forward then or cap?...actually it could solve both! And maybe the thinking was saving cap and replacing ebb! And not questioning value, contract, or who's better! Just why

In the next 2 years Edmonton needs to re-sign Draisaitl and McDavid. thats a minimum of $16,000,000 a year gone! If anything to re-sign everyone else I can see RNH being traded, possibly to Montreal if Duchene doesn't happen.

I can understand the emotional context of this, but the argument isn't really fairly poised. Eberle has carried an unusually high shot % and last year it was lower than average for the first time in 3 years whereas for the first time in his career Strome has reached an average Shooting percentage.

In Strome's previous years, he should probably be approximately a 20 goal player, and Eberle probably should, too.

Noting that a 21 or 22 year old player is bringing down the possession metrics of a star player is a bit of an unfair comparison. It should be said that 26 year old Eberle brought down the possession metrics of the 19 year old kid he played with.

I like Eberle. He had a great penchant for being clutch. This isn't all doom and gloom. The Oilers have capspace to ensure they can keep McDavid and Draisaitl with wiggle room over a longer period.
